Pen Spinning Fundamental tech

The Fundamentals are the basic tricks in PenSpinning. They are the first tricks you should learn, and a good tip is also to learn them in their Reverse version before starting to learn harder tricks. Knowing the fundamentals is a necessity for a lot of other tricks, ex. you need to know Pass and Charge to be able to learn Twisted Sonic, TA to learn Fake triple, Sonic to learn Sonic Clip, etc. Some people count Infinity as a Fundamental, but it’s not. It’s also a trick you should learn early on though, since it’s quite usefull. The Fundamentals are:
  • ThumbAround [TA]
  • Sonic
  • Charge
  • Fingerpass

Charge

Yet another, and the in my opinion hardest to grasp, fundamental. The pen makes rotations between the fingertips of 2 and 3 (in it’s normal mode, ofcourse you can also make it rotate between any other 2 fingers…). The pen is constantly between these two fingers, it just makes rotations by moving mostly the bottom finger, but also the top finger a bit , back and forth. This trick is actually performed like a Sonic except you don’t bend 2 down.

Charge 1
Step 1: Hold the pen as if you were going to perform a Sonic, between 2 and 3 (and with the rear stuck behindyour thumb if you still haven’t really grasped the trick), but keep your fingers a little bent.
Charge 2
Step 2: Strech out your fingers and bend 3 backwards a little. The tip that was down when you started should now start making a movement upwards.

Charge 3
Step 3: Let the pen continue it’s rotation untill the side that was down in the beginning is on top, and then…

Charge 4
Step 4: …bend 3 a little forward instead and 2 backward, and let the pen make a rotation towards the thumb.

Charge 5-1
Step 5: Catch the pen with your thumb or keep doing steps 2-4 over and over again to get a continuous movement.

Sonic

Sonic is another fundamental trick. It’s not as easy as TA to grasp how it works, but once you know it, it’s easy as hell. The pen rotates between 1 and 3 and goes around 2. When you’re starting out with learning this trick a good tip is to start out with the back of the pen stuck behind your thumb, so you can build up some pressure to give the pen speed. Once you know the trick a good idea is to train this away.

Sonic 1
Step 1: Hold the pen with 2 and 3 at the CoP with the rear stuck behind your thumb.

Sonic 2
Step 2: While lightly pressing 2 down, release the pen with T and continue pushing 2 down. When releasing the pen with T, push 1 towards 3, so you catch the pen between those fingers.

Sonic 3
Step 3: Let the pen make a nice rotation between 1 and 3 untill you can unfold 2 again so the pen ends up between 1 and 2 instead.

Sonic 4
Step 4: Catch the pen between 1 and 2 and let it rotate untill you catch it with your thumb.

ThumbAround [TA]

This is one of the fundamental tricks, and is performed by pushing the pen with your middle finger in a rotation around your thumb. It’s quite easy to grasp how it should be performed, but hard to master. Don’t give up after trying to learn it for 15 minutes, just keep trying!

TA 1 Step 1: Hold the pen with T, 1 and 2, with 2 at the CoP, 1 closer to the rear of the pen and T somewhere between those two fingers.

TA 2 Step 2: Give the pen a push with 2 while at the same time releasing it with 1. A circular motion around the thumb should now start.

TA 3 Step 3: Let the pen spin all the way around the thumb…

TA 4 Step 4: …and catch it.
